IRS tax debt: what they say, how to spot it, what to do

An IRS tax debt caller threatens arrest or demands payment today. Check your tax account independently and call the IRS through its published contact route.

What they say

These are typical approaches, written as examples. The wording and claimed sender can change.

  • “You owe back taxes. Pay today or officers will arrest you.”
  • “This is the IRS. Buy gift cards while I stay on the line.”
  • “Your refund is blocked until you give me your banking password.”

How to spot it

  • The caller threatens immediate arrest or demands a particular instant payment method.
  • They refuse to let you verify a notice or check your own tax account.
  • They ask for gift-card codes, a banking password or remote access to your device.

What to do now

  1. Hang up on threats and do not pay through the caller’s instructions. A real tax question can be checked separately. Do not assume a phone number or a claimed employee ID proves identity.
  2. Open irs.gov yourself and review your online account or genuine correspondence already in your records. Use the IRS contact page to find the right help. The published individual tax help number is 1-800-829-1040.
  3. Keep any voicemail, letter image and payment instructions. Use the reporting directions on the IRS tax scams page. If you have a real notice, verify it independently rather than ignoring all tax correspondence because of this call.

If you already paid or shared details

  1. If you paid, contact the bank or card issuer promptly and explain the impersonation. Keep receipts, transfer references and any gift cards you still have.
  2. If you shared a Social Security number or tax account information, use IdentityTheft.gov and the identity-theft help reached through irs.gov. Change compromised passwords through the real services.

Contact the bank, card issuer or payment provider promptly and ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed. Recovery is not guaranteed. Change exposed passwords through the genuine service. Keep receipts and messages privately for your report.

Report the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If identity details were exposed, start at IdentityTheft.gov. Verify IRS contact details on its official help page.

Questions people ask

Does every IRS contact start with a phone call?

Do not decide whether a demand is genuine from the contact method alone. Check the notice or account through irs.gov and contact the IRS independently.

What if I really owe tax?

Verify the balance and payment options through your own IRS account or the IRS’s published contact route. Do not follow an unverified caller’s urgent payment instructions.
